You will want to make this early- to mid-November to allow it to ferment and the flavors to mingle in time for Christmas.. Mince pies are a Christmas staple and this really easy mince pie recipe will soon become a family favourite.

The ingredients needed to make Mince pies:

  2. Make ready plain flour
  3. Get ground almonds

  1. Rub butter into flour with fingertips until you have a crumbly mixture
  2. Add almonds, sugar, orange zest and salt and mix together with fingertips

  4. Put in a plastic bag and put in the fridge for 30 minutes
  5. Roll dough out on a lightly floured surface nice and thin (but still thick enough that it doesn't tear)
  6. Cut out 18 holes and place each one into a greased mince pie tin.
  7. Spoon mincemeat into each cup (don't overfill or it'll leak over in the oven - a level tsp or a little less should be plenty)
  8. Cut out star/Christmas tree/holly shapes from the remaining dough and place on top.
  9. Brush each mince pie with the beaten egg (this gives the pies a nice golden glaze) and put in a preheated oven at 180 for 12-15 mins (keep a close eye on them, they cook quickly and burn easily!)
  10. After they've cooled, lightly sieve some icing sugar over them if you want to
