Reduce the heat, cover the pan loosely with a lid and leave to simmer very gently for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  4. Stir the beans into the casserole, and continue to cook, stirring occasionally, until the sauce is thick. Meanwhile, steam the cabbage.
  5. Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Melt some butter over the cabbage and season to taste with salt and pepper. Serve together.
